My family and I usually draw names for Christmas, but this year we decided to play it a little differently and give each other stockings instead! We thought it would be fun to have more to open, although we've set quite strict parameters for budget so that each person would end up spending the same amount as if they'd bought one, bigger ticket item. And, we've added another twist - each item has to be food related! At our home, the holidays really do revolve around food - preparing brunch with my dad's famous pancakes, Jonathan and my mom labouring (with love) over turkey dinner... the sense of holiday and family really comes to life around the dinner table. So for these reasons (not to mention that we're all serious food enthusiasts) each stocking item has to either be edible or kitchen related. Sounds fun to me! Read More

Our iPad Launch

Posted By:Celine
We're pleased beyond imagination to present to you our very first Pure Green stand-alone app for the iPad. It's been a long time in the works, but it's finally here and it's gorgeous. Over the past year we've had more than a few requests for a digital edition, and we've been listening. But we didn't want to just throw something together, we wanted to do it right, which the talented folks at Lackner//Buckinham certainly helped us do. We need your support to make this a success and continue offering the magazine both on the iPad and in print, so please give it a try... it's only $6.99! There's some extra goodies in there not included in the print edition, such as extra photo galleries and downloadable recipes. For the complete rundown on how the app works, please visit our TECHNICAL PAGE. The app is available on iTunes. Please let us know what you think, and thank you for reading! Read More

Yesterday's post was about winter chill and a simple recipe to guard against it. This post is somewhat similar, with the help of a marshmallows! I have been so busy that I haven't really gotten into the Christmas season in terms of decor ideas here on PGM - I apologize for that. However, perhaps I can entice you with food treats instead - perhaps it's my pregnancy, scratch that, I'm sure it's my pregnancy, but home baking is what I'm craving for the holidays this year. Homemade marshmallows among them! Read More

The snow has been falling off and on for the past few weeks now. It's not here to stay, not quite yet, but still it has me yearning for wholesome, winter food. This recipe is a true reflection of how Jonathan and I cook, much of the time. I have an idea, he helps me tweak it, and together we create something yummy! This soup is just a mix of ingredients, a basic tomato and vegetable variety, with a few added spices - the recipe isn't meant to be followed to the letter. It's quick to throw together, feels hearty in the belly, and warms you through and through. Read More

Last week I had the pleasure of going to the One of a Kind show in Toronto - it's always a highlight for me, a sign that Christmas is near. I absolutely love strolling the aisles, meeting new artisans and finding treasures among the masses. This year I fell in love with Grace Designs, a Toronto accessories brand created by designer Alison Gledhill. The bags are made using vintage/upcycled kimonos, a fabulous use of this traditionally bright and interesting fabric. Read More

Eco Baby | A New Column

Posted By:Celine
Well, we have big news! I've been hanging on to it for six months now, but my shyness is out of the way AND it feels plenty safe to share at this point... the PGM family is about to get a teensy bit bigger! Jonathan (our Food Editor) and I are having a baby! Of course I'm sure there's not a couple in history that hasn't gone into this with a little apprehension, but so far so good. I've cruised through the first 5 months a lot quicker than I thought and am starting into the 6th with a teensy bit of 'Holy moly this is really happening' running through my brain. Amongst balancing producing and managing Pure Green, the baby's room has slowly, very slowly, been taking shape. Being that I do my very best to surround myself with non-toxic and eco-friendly products every day, it goes without saying that I'll take this approach with my wee one too. In fact, I've made a pact with myself to have a plastic free baby and only choose non-toxic, natural materials. Now, a single trip to Babies R Us will tell you that this is no easy feat, but so far I've been able to find alternatives for a lot of things. And the rest? Chances are you don't even need it. There is SO much to say about the baby industry in terms of health and environment, so I thought it fun and relevant to start a series on the PGM blog called Eco Baby in which we'll share tips, ideas and products that fit the bill for a natural, healthy yet stylish little baby. As part of that series I'll share my progress creating a non-toxic baby's room, starting with the basics... the walls! Read More

Events | Holiday Flowers

Posted By:Celine
This past week we were delighted to collaborate with Anthropologie on their special Holi-DIY series, which was taking place in stores across Canada and the US. Ours took place at the Toronto Shops at Don Mills location - the store looked beautiful decked out in greenery for Christmas, the perfect backdrop for our event centering on holiday flower arranging. We enlisted the help of Alison Westlake of Coriander Girl, a fabulous flower shop located in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood on Queen Street West. Besides the opportunity to work with delightful and fragrant holiday greenery and blooms, we took the opportunity to share a little about WHY sustainable flowers are so important Read More
